Matthew Perry’s Death and Ketamine: Northwest Ketamine Clinics on the Recent Arrests and Safety Concerns

Aug 22, 2024

Following the tragic death of Mathew Perry caused by the acute effects of ketamine, five individuals have now been arrested, including two physicians, a drug dealer, and Mr Perry’s assistant.  We at Northwest Ketamine Clinics are saddened by this incident and offer sympathy to his loved ones.  In our opinion, it was not ketamine, but medical malpractice, greed, and drug dealers combined to cut short the life of a well-loved man who was struggling with addiction.

As a leader in ketamine-based healing, we are passionate about the benefits of this remarkable treatment and feel it is critical at this time to highlight the importance of safety, medical supervision, and ethical standards in ketamine therapy.  Further, we call for the development of national certifications and standards of care to be developed and followed by all ketamine providers.

Since 2017, NWKC has delivered nearly 40,000 IV ketamine infusions with no significant medical concerns.  As medical providers offering life-changing ketamine treatments in safe, therapeutic environments, we exist to mitigate and decrease all possible risks so you can experience the benefits of ketamine therapy without having to worry about safety. At NWKC, patients are paired with an experienced nurse who monitors their vital signs and mental state throughout every ketamine treatment.  Emergency equipment is always immediately available in the unlikely event it is needed.

Ketamine, when given safely, is one of the most effective and safe treatments for mood disorders and chronic pain available today.  It promotes brain health by releasing brain-derived growth factors and fosters new connections within the brain.  Additionally, it is one of the only effective treatments for some forms of neuropathic pain, such as CRPS.  It is highly effective and, when given correctly, entirely safe.  A recent review showed “No cases of overdose or death related to the use of ketamine as an antidepressant in a therapeutic setting”.

At NWKC we promote and adhere to the highest quality care, making our clinic the gold standard for ketamine treatment in the Pacific Northwest.  Our standards include:

  • We discourage “at home”, unmonitored ketamine treatments and are concerned about their safety and potential for abuse.
  • Our experienced medical professionals deliver and guide every treatment we give.  Our team includes board-certified nurse anesthesiologists and nurse practitioners, and registered nurses.
  • Treatment at NWKC is always individualized and given according to research-backed protocols.
  • All patients undergo medical screening and have vital signs monitored throughout their visits.
  • We partner with therapists who are available for integration of the ketamine experience, and for deeper therapeutic sessions as needed.
  • We believe in data and track all details of our treatment.  In this world of “more is better”, we have found that, for many individuals, lower doses are more effective and provide faster symptom relief than higher doses.
  • We are compassionate, welcome to all, and focused on positive outcomes for all our patients.

About Northwest Ketamine Clinics

Among the first ketamine clinics in the nation and a founding member of the American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners (ASKP3), Northwest Ketamine Clinics was the first and remains the most experienced ketamine provider in the Pacific Northwest.  After nearly 40,000 infusions, 86% of our closely monitored patients achieved significant (greater than 50% improvement) symptom relief in under three weeks.  NWKC is led by Allyn Wilcock, CRNA, a board-certified nurse anesthesiologist with nearly 25 years of medical experience.  Everyone at NWKC is passionate about this remarkable treatment and dedicated to its safe use.
